That's a teenager's or young adult's bedroom — bed frame taken apart, mattress wrapped, dresser, desk, computer or console, a few totes of clothes, books, a guitar, the box of childhood stuff they made you promise to keep. You're not keeping it forever. You're keeping it in one organized place until they tell you where to send it.
What the timing usually looks like
- Weeks 1–10: Basic Combat Training. They don't need any personal stuff.
- Weeks 10–20+: AIT. Some jobs are short; some run six months or more.
- Right before graduation: Orders come in for their first duty station.
- First leave home: Usually around the holidays after graduation. This is when you go through the unit together and decide what ships, what stays, what gets donated.
Why climate-controlled is the right call
The stuff is going to sit through at least one season change. Mattresses don't love humid summers in a metal box. Photo albums, electronics, and instruments are even more sensitive. Plan for Basic plus AIT plus the move to first duty station — usually four to eight months for combined OSUT, or six to twelve months for longer AIT tracks.
What size do we need for one kid's room?
A 5×5 or 5×10 is usually enough. The 5×10 gives a little breathing room so you can pack without playing Tetris.
Can our soldier get into the unit when they're home on leave?
Yes, if you add them as an authorized user. A lot of families keep a parent as the primary and add the soldier so they can grab stuff during leave.
What if their first duty station isn't Fort Sill?
